How can you tell if its silver?
Hi i bought a silver tea set today at a car boot sale. The man told me he tought it was sterling silver. But there are no marks on it anywhere and it is heavy. Is there any way of telling. Rose

there a small chance that u have the real thing. the drop dead real silver and sterling have been long gone, some may be on a mantle here and there but as a 45 year, dealer i don't see you have much of a chance. you can look again at the back. there some stuff out there that has a very smalll makers mark. if you can bring your self to take a chunk out of the bottom and look at where a pocket kinfe could cut away the surface enough to show the under metal, at a s[pot u don't notice, so if it is yellow underneath you have silver plated copper, then if it just lead it will cut away and may even pliable it could be junk, the best beat is to take a small piece (pitcher)to some one you know that has a resale jewelry shop and see i their eyes pop out if they don't enjoy it there aren't many out there that the dealers don't have
